Drinking House Closed

Each daily devotional below begins with an excerpt from a transcript of Duncan Campbell telling the story of how the 1949 Hebridean revival began. (1)

Duncan Campbell said:-

I suppose you have read about the most remarkable moment… the Acts of the apostles repeated again.. It was in the village of Arnol. A young girl who was here for several years, and came to us last year; she was over at the house that shook when the elder prayed. That was what happened at midnight… The situation was difficult again… there was opposition, bitter opposition… “He is teaching error”. So it went on, but at midnight this man got up to pray… I still recall his words, “God, do you know that your honour is at stake?.. Do you know that you made a promise that you are not fulfilling?… There are 5 ministers here, along with Mr Campbell… I don’t know where they stand, not even Mr Campbell. I think I can say that I’m thirsty… I am thirsting for a manifestation of your power”… And then, about 1:45 in the morning, he stood up and said this “God, on the day that you promised to pour water on the thirsty, I now take it upon myself to charge You to fulfil your covenant engagement.” When that man said that, the farmhouse shook like a leaf! An elder and a minister said to me… “An earth tremor”. When John Smith stopped praying, I pronounced the benediction and went out of the church… to find the whole community alive; the whole community alive… The gracious movement broke out that day in Scotland, and today is known as the Arnol revival… One of the mighty movements in the midst of this gracious visitation. Do you know that the drinking house was closed that night and it has never been opened since?… The men who used to drink there and spend their evenings there are now praying in our prayer meetings and one of them is a minister, Donald McPhail…

In Britain today, we sometimes read in the newspaper of ‘all you can drink’ promotions in pubs and clubs. Some advertisements outside pubs read ‘All you can drink for £10’. Others read, ‘Girls drink free until 1am’. Cheap gin was one of the characteristics of this country before the Wesley revival broke out in 1739, and gin drinking grew exponentially with the production of cheap gin. Alcohol consumption is on the rise again in the UK at present, and although there are signs that some of the younger generation are moving away from alcohol, gin and tonic is the most popular drink, nationally.

PSALM 63:1-11

‘O God, You are my God, earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You, my body longs for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. I have seen You in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.Because Your love is better than life, my lips will glorify You. I will praise you as long as I live, and in Your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise You. On my bed I remember you; I think of You through the watches of the night. Because You are my help, I sing in the shadow of Your wings. My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me. They who seek my life will be destroyed; they will go down to the depths of the earth. They will be given over to the sword and become food for jackals. But the king will rejoice in God, all who swear by God’s name will praise Him, while the mouths of liars will be silenced.

Lord, we pray on behalf of the young people of this country, who thirst for cheap alcohol, but whose spirits are dead in sin. We cry out to You for their salvation. We declare over the youth of this country that the Lord’s love is better than life, it is better than the thrill that alcohol can give. Lord, You moved in this country when this nation was soaked in cheap gin. You had mercy then on England, sending the Wesley revival, on Wales in 1904 and Lewis in 1949 Lord, have mercy again.
